My Religion

This is a paper I had to write for a class, but I feel it spells everything quite nicely so I’m posting it here.

My Philosophy of life

I believe all people are created equal; male and female, regardless of race or creed. All life is sacred and deserving of respect.

I believe that in the beginning we were created perfect, but through our ancestors’ lack of faith and failure to live in harmony with nature and their Creator, we have become distorted and mere shadows of what we were meant to be. All people share a spark of the Divine and so we all have a great capacity of good. However we were also given the priceless gift of free will and therefore have just as great a capacity for evil.

I believe that our Creator is too big to be fully understood. There is one Truth but there are numerous visions of it as the Divine shows us only what we can handle as we are able. I also believe however that the basic character of the Devine can be seen by any who choose to search. I believe that the Divine is above all, Being, but It is also Beauty, Real, Love, Soul, Truth, Power, Grace, Justice, Timeless, Intelligence, All-Perceiving, and much more than any human language can contain.

I believe that as possessors of that Divine spark we are mirrors of our Creator and we must act accordingly. To those who have not yet found the Divine we must show Beauty, Love, and Reality. We must be fair in our dealings with others. We must be true and live Truth.

I believe that as Creator, the Divine is the only one with true authority and the right to judge. It sees the heart, mind, and soul. It is the only being that could give an accurate and wholly fair judgment. It alone knows the path It has set before an individual and is therefore the only being able to judge how they have followed it.

I believe that governments have been put in place by the Divine and therefore have real authority to be respected and obeyed. However, those in charge are also human and subject to error. Ultimately we all answer to a higher power. Because of this we are fully responsible for our own actions and their consequences.

I believe that each individual is also fully responsible for discovering on their own the path they must take to their Creator and what part it is that the Divine asks them to play in the grand scheme of things as they live out their time here on earth. Having said that, I believe the Divine is relational. It desires to be closer to us, It’s children. And It will not leave us to our own devices when it comes to finding It. It is ever willing to show Itself to those who truly wish to see It. It speaks to those willing to listen for It’s voice.

My most precious values

It’s hard for me to pick my most precious values when they all mean a lot to me. After all, if they mean nothing to you why have them in the first place? There is however one value that if it were not present, all the rest would have no meaning whatsoever.

Freedom of choice is the most important value of all. If we had not the power, the right to choose our own path, we would simply be following a track set before us. We would be robots, acting only as we were programmed to. Our lives would be fully decided and dictated long before we existed. Love would mean nothing because we could not choose to hate instead. There would be no personal responsibility because we could not choose to act differently. There could be no justice, as everything would have been decided before the events to be judged took place. There could be no right or wrong, everything would just be.

Another value I cherish is tolerance. Because we have the freedom to choose our own path we must also allow others to exercise their right to do the same. We have no right to force our beliefs on others simply because we think we are correct. We are just as entitled to make wrong turns and get lost as we are to make the right decisions. I cherish tolerance because I cherish my freedom to choose. I am myself as I was created to be and I will not allow any human to dictate what it is I must do. I follow rules and regulations laid down by the appropriate authorities not because I am told to, but because those rules are right.

The last value I will share is True Beauty. In truth, beauty encompasses many other values. Love, Wisdom, Balance, and growth are all examples of Beauty. All that is truly Beautiful is good, and all that is truly Good is beautiful. You can argue that beauty is in eye of the beholder, but that statement does not apply to True Beauty. Because of the corruption rampant in this world, True Beauty can be hidden and covered in many layers of filth. It is also true that something may appear to be beautiful that is not truly good. Please note that the operative word is “appear,” you must search and dig to the true essence of a thing, that is when you will know that a thing is truly Beautiful. It is difficult for me to explain why True Beauty is so important to me. I can only say that it is when I experience True Beauty that I feel whole and I am the closest I can be to my Creator while I am here on this earth.

Living out my values

I try to treat all human beings with love and respect. I try to shape my thoughts to reflect the attitudes I believe I need to exhibit in my life. To put it in the simplest terms I attempt to live my life by the “Golden rule.” Every day I renew my commitment to the path I have chosen and I attempt to treat all others as I would like to be treated. I am not perfect yet so I often fail in my endeavor. When that happens I go back and ask for forgiveness not only of the ones I wronged but also of my Creator whom I disappointed.

My plans for the future are much as they are now; I will continue to search and to test my beliefs as I am still learning. I plan to keep an open mind so I may never stop learning. I hope that as I learn I will also grow to become a better person than I am now.
